Celebration of Chinese New Year
Thank you to all who joined us in the International Center to celebrate Chinese New Year 2019. We had over 100 participants attend. Chinese New Year is one of the most important traditional holidays in China. Along with China, the day is also celebrated in countries like Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, North Korea, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam, which all follow the lunar calendar. It is a festival marking the start of the new year. It begins on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, also known as the Lunar New Year, and is celebrated with family and friends, special meals, fireworks, and gift giving.

A Message From Parker Kaeding - London Program Participant
My time in London during my semester abroad was invaluable. I learned more and was exposed to more than I thought possible. The group of students I went with opened a full scale production of Fuddy Meers in a small black box theatre. I learned to be self-sufficient and that process was beyond beneficial. I also had the pleasure of seeing 50 professional productions, including Hamilton. While abroad I had the privilege of traveling to Amsterdam, Paris, Scotland, and Ireland. I am still surprised at the vast amount of landscapes, palaces, and shows I was able to see in the incredible semester. It does not disappoint!

Brother Guillaume Yame: ESL Classroom Assistant
For the spring 2019 semester, the De La Salle Language Institute welcomes back Br. Guillaume Yame. Originally from Togo, West Africa, Br. Guillaume traveled to SMU in order to improve his English language skills before beginning his graduate studies. This summer, Br. Guillaume will have completed both the M.A. in Teaching and M.A. in Lasallian Leadership programs. As part of his M.A. in Teaching program, Br. Guillaume is acting as an ESL classroom assistant this semester inside the language institute. While working closely with DLI instructors and students, he is using this experience to apply within a classroom what he has learned during his graduate studies. In his home country, Br. Guillaume was previously a middle school French and religious studies instructor. Br. Guillaume believes his passion for teaching stems from inspiration from his own past teachers. He considers himself fortunate not only to have had many teachers who loved what they were doing, but also to have seen firsthand how that joy for teaching inspired students. DLI wishes to thank Br. Guillaume for sharing his love of and talent for teaching with everyone here.

A Message From Mackenzie Ellefson Studying in Florence, Italy
Ciao! My name is Mackenzie, and I’m a graphic design major studying in Florence, Italy through Study Abroad Italy (SAI). Thus far, Florence has been nothing shy of amazing. Being here has shown me a new way of living in just three short weeks. Florence has taught me getting lost can lead to the most exciting experiences and meeting the most interesting people. I’ve never been happier, and Florence is helping me to understand who I am and who I want to be.

Student & Student Worker Spotlight - Mandukhai Alimaa
“Mongolia”: What’s the first thing that comes to mind? Genghis Khan? The Gobi Desert? Mandukhai Alimaa? Mandukhai is most likely your first thought if you’ve already met her. If not, hopefully, you will meet her soon, and she will be your first thought the next time you hear the name of this East Asian country. A freshman who arrived last August, she is now accustomed to being asked if she lives in a yurt and has horses. Stereotypes like these initially surprised her, but she is now amused when asked if Mongolians have cars and know anything about fashion. Her easygoing nature is evident as she enjoys even the winter here; it’s -35°F (without wind-chill) in Ulan Bator, her hometown and the capital city. She appreciates the opportunity to study at SMU saying that being here is better than she imagined. When making the decision to study in the U.S., photos of our campus’s natural beauty first attracted her. Safety, rankings, class size, and scholarships also affected her decision to come here to pursue degrees in business intelligence and finance. After graduating, she plans to attend graduate school at Princeton, gain work experience, and then return home to start her own business establishing trade relations between Mongolia and the U.S. in the fashion industry. In the meantime, she’s beginning to get that work experience as the International Center’s newest student worker.

Students Helping Students
Students from Dr. Karen Sorvaag’s ED445 Advanced Literacy Methods for Diverse Learners course have been observing ESL teaching and learning strategies within a number of the language institute’s classes. The ED445 students have also been paired with international students for the purpose of acting as conversation partners and tutors throughout the semester. These soon to be teachers are now meeting weekly with SMU’s English language learners. This partnership, while providing course-based practical interaction for both sides, is also assisting in the development of a cross-cultural understanding for all participants. DLI truly appreciates the collaboration with the ED445 instructor and students.
